A young sales girl, Christiana Innocent, has died in Umuahia, Abia State, after attempting to terminate her pregnancy using a local method. The young woman, who was reportedly abandoned by the father of the unborn child, turned to her aunt, a nurse, for help. The nurse allegedly provided her with a substance to abort the pregnancy, but Christiana took an overdose, leading to severe internal complications.
According to reports, Christiana fainted while trying to go to the restroom but regained consciousness. The next morning, she called her brother for help, but he was unable to respond immediately due to financial constraints. By the time he arrived at her workplace, Christiana had already passed away.
The incident has sparked concerns about unsafe abortion practices and the growing number of young women resorting to local methods to terminate unwanted pregnancies due to fear, stigma, or lack of access to proper healthcare. The family is appealing to authorities to allow for Christiana's burial as investigations continue ¹ ².
