Former Abia State Governor, Senator Theodore Orji, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a letter addressed to the PDP Ward 1 Chairman in Umuahia North Local Government Area, Orji cited "wide consultations with family and associates" as the reason for his decision, effective immediately.
Orji, who served as governor from 2007 to 2015 and represented Abia Central in the eighth and ninth Senate, expressed gratitude for the opportunities and experiences gained during his time in the party. His resignation marks a significant development in Abia politics, given his long-standing influence and role in the PDP since the return of democracy in 1999.
Orji's son, former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji, had defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier, while his wife also left the PDP months prior. Senator Orji's next political move remains unclear ¹ ² ³.
