A devastating accident occurred in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, claiming the lives of nine people, including a pregnant woman, a mother, and her child. The incident happened on Wednesday night, October 22, 2025, around 8:00 p.m., near the main gate of Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) and Holy Trinity Church.

The cement-laden truck, allegedly belonging to Dangote Cement, suffered brake failure, causing it to ram into traders and road users in the densely populated area. The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State, Mr. Ezekiel Ibitoye, confirmed eight fatalities, including five males, two females, and one child ¹ ² ³.

Residents blame the tragedy on the removal of a barricade meant to prevent heavy-duty trucks from accessing the community. Some community members had reportedly used the barricade to extort N10,000 from truck drivers ¹ ² ³.

The incident has sparked outrage, with sympathizers demanding action to prevent similar accidents. The AAUA Students' Union Government has called for a ban on heavy-duty trucks plying Akungba roads ⁴.
