An 18-year-old boy, Chinedu Abimbor, was fatally shot by police in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. The incident occurred at a police checkpoint when Abimbor, driving a Mercedes-Benz, failed to stop after being flagged down by police officers. One of the operatives allegedly fired at the vehicle, killing Abimbor on the spot ¹ ² ³.
The victim's younger brother, who was in the vehicle at the time of the incident, was arrested by the police and taken into custody. This sparked outrage among youths and the deceased's family, who demanded justice for Abimbor and the release of his detained brother ¹ ² ³.
Protesters took to the streets of Ekpoma on Thursday, marching to the palace of the traditional ruler of Ekpoma, HRH Anthony Ehizogie Abumere II, to press their demands. A spokesman for the protesters, Lucky Adaba, claimed that the police have formed a habit of harassing young men driving cars in Ekpoma ¹ ² ³.
The Edo State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the incident to ascertain what actually happened ¹ ² ³.
