Nnamdi Kanu's lawyers have written to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, requesting her intervention in the IPOB leader's case in Abuja. The lawyers, led by Aloy Ejimakor, are seeking the CJN's help in either reassigning the case to another judge or transferring it to the South-East region ¹.
The request comes after Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako recused herself from the case on September 24, 2024, following Kanu's request. However, the case was subsequently reassigned to the same judge, prompting Kanu's lawyers to protest the move ².
Ejimakor argued that the reassignment of the case to the same judge despite her recusal would create a public perception of bias and undermine the integrity of the judiciary. He cited several court judgments, including Okoduwa v. State (1988) and Rashidi v. Ministry of Health (1990), to support his argument ¹.
Kanu's lawyers are also seeking the transfer of the case to the South-East region, where the alleged offenses took place. They suggested that the case could be transferred to Umuahia, Awka, Enugu, Asaba, or Port Harcourt ².
The development is the latest in Kanu's ongoing trial, which began in 2015. The IPOB leader is facing charges related to treason and terrorism.
