The House of Representatives is set to convene a national dialogue on local government autonomy on Monday, December 2, 2024, in Abuja. This dialogue aims to consolidate ideas and strategies for achieving a robust local government framework, critical to the constitutional review efforts ¹.
The national dialogue is being organized by the House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), in collaboration with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) and with support from the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) ¹.
*Objectives of the National Dialogue*
The dialogue seeks to address critical issues related to local government administration, including:
- _Financial autonomy_: Exploring ways to guarantee financial independence for local governments.
- _Administrative independence_: Discussing strategies to strengthen administrative autonomy for local governments.
- _Democratic elections_: Examining ways to ensure democratic elections for local government officials.
- _Accountability and transparency_: Developing mechanisms to promote accountability and transparency at the local level ¹.
*Next Steps*
Following the national dialogue, the House of Representatives Committee will commence zonal public hearings in January 2025. These hearings will take place in 12 states, representing the six geopolitical zones ².
