Meet A Musician Of Igbo Descent That Just Won The Grammy Award For Best Rap Album [Photos]

Tyler Gregory Okonma, professionally known by his stage name Tyler, the Creator, is an American rapper and record producer. Regarded as one of the most influential rappers of his generation, Tyler, the Creator is known for his distinctive laid-back lyrical delivery, offsetting the lyrics' often grim content.

Okonma is biracial; his father is originally from the Igbo tribe of Nigeria while his mother is of African-American descent.

Born in Ladera Heights, California, United States, Okonma began teaching himself to play the piano at the age of fourteen. After his studies in Los Angeles and Sacramento, he took his stage name from a Myspace page he used to post his creative endeavors.

Following a large contribution to Odd Future's early work, in 2009, Okonmafirst gained recognition in the American music industry after the release of his first solo mixtape, Bastard. Two years later, after releasing his first studio album titled Goblin, he signed a joint deal with RED Distribution and Sony Music Entertainment for himself and his label, Odd Future Records.

The 31-year-old talented musician has received several individual accolades. In 2020, his album, Igor, won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. Just recently, his album, Call Me If You Get Lost, won the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.
