The leadership crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified, with a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Eme Okoro, insisting that former Senate President Adolphus Wabara remains the recognized chairman of the PDP BoT. Okoro rejected the appointment of former Senator Mao Ohuabunwa as the new chairman, citing that the move was unconstitutional and a disregard for the PDP's constitution.
Similarly, former Abia State Commissioner for Housing, James Okpara, has declared that Wabara's removal as PDP BoT Chairman is invalid. Okpara criticized those opposing the forthcoming national convention, describing their actions as unpatriotic and detrimental to the party's survival ¹ ² ³.
The crisis began when a faction of the PDP, led by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, dissolved the Wabara-led BoT and appointed Ohuabunwa as the new chairman. The Damagum faction has refused to recognize the move, insisting that Wabara and Damagun remain the legitimate leaders ⁴ ⁵ ⁶.
