The Northern States Governors' Forum (NSGF) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic fuel tanker explosion in Essa community, Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State, which claimed dozens of lives. Chairman of NSGF and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, conveyed heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Niger State, particularly the bereaved families and Governor Mohammed Umar Bago.
"This tragedy is profoundly distressing and painful. Our thoughts and prayers are with every family affected by this catastrophic incident, as well as the government and people of Niger State in this moment of grief," Governor Yahaya stated.
The governor cautioned the public against scooping fuel and engaging in hazardous acts during such incidents, emphasizing the need for improved safety standards and public awareness on the dangers of transporting combustible materials.
Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State also expressed grief, describing the incident as "worrisome, unfortunate, and pathetic". He prayed for the repose of the victims' souls and speedy recovery of the injured, urging residents to prioritize safety and value their lives ¹ ² ³.
The death toll has risen to 42, with over 60 others injured. Emergency responders and volunteers have been commended for their swift intervention, which helped mitigate the disaster's scale ⁴.
