Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has embarked on an ambitious project to rehabilitate and retrofit 200 primary healthcare facilities across the 184 wards in the state within 100 days. The project, tagged "Project Ekwueme", aims to improve access to quality healthcare, especially in rural communities, reduce exposure to quacks and fake drugs, and effectively improve good health and longevity for the general populace.
According to Governor Otti, the primary healthcare facilities will have independent power supply from renewable energy sources, efficient water supply systems, and other support infrastructure to improve the operational environment and preserve drug supplies and medical consumables. The Governor has also assured that his administration will use high-quality and durable materials for the rehabilitation process and will not tolerate any form of mediocrity.
The project is expected to benefit present and future generations of Ndi Abia by improving their maternal care, child birth management records, and first-level care to anyone who needs medical assistance on a round-the-clock basis. Governor Otti has encouraged community leaders and other stakeholders to be part of the project monitoring efforts and ensure that acts of sabotage against the facilities are frustrated.
The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, has highlighted the achievements of Governor Otti in healthcare delivery, including the allocation of 15 percent of the total budget of 2024 and 2025 to healthcare. The Government is investing about N10.7 billion in the entire "Project Ekwueme", which is expected to be completed by February 2025.
The project has been hailed as a landmark initiative by the member representing Bende South State Constituency, Hon. Emmanuel Ndubuisi, who assured that his people would protect the project. The Mayor of Bende LGA, Deacon Uwabunkeonye Bassey, has also lauded the Governor for the project, saying it would reduce maternal mortality rates in the area.
In addition to "Project Ekwueme", Governor Otti has also announced plans to establish 200 primary health centers across Abia's 17 Local Government Areas.
